News Briefs

Continued from page 3

The organization will begin gathering signatures in October to put a full same-sex marriage measure on the ballot for November 2012, which would give them the better part of a year to do voter education on the subject.

The state already has a broad domestic partner law. The existing legislation is very similar to civil union in everything but

name.

Maine activists are also gathering signatures to put a full marriage law on the 2012 ballot. Lawmakers passed such a measure in 2009, but voters killed it in a "people's veto" election.

A marriage ban amendment is headed for the 2012 election in Minnesota, and GOP lawmakers in North Carolina also want one next year.

Cops halt kiss-in, but storm halts pope

Madrid-A day after police intervened and prevented pro-gay protesters from staging a "kiss-in" along Pope Benedict's route through the city, a large thunderstorm rolled in, stopping the pope from finishing a speech in favor of opposite-sex marriage on August 20:

The winds from the storm toppled a tent, shook the platform on which he was speaking and tore his skullcap off in front of a million and a half people.

During the speech, he asserted that marriage is between a man and a woman and cannot be ended.

Spain, despite being a predominantly Catholic country, legalized same-sex marriage in 2005.

On Friday, hours before the pope was scheduled to drive through the city, police intercepted about 50 protesters planning a kiss-in similar to the one the pope faced in Barcelona last November. That earlier protest saw 200 people turn out.

Protesters, who organized through Facebook, instead kissed in front of the far more numerous police, who also kept groups of young Catholics away from the protest-

Prague has its first Pride festival

Prague The Czech Republic capital saw its first Gay Pride march and festival on August 13, days after the country's deputy chancellor called gay people "deviants.”

""

Around 300 police officers held off rightwing extremists shouting abuse. Unlike other Eastern European gay pride events, however, there were only a few dozen strident protesters.

Another counter-parade in favor of “family values" was peaceful, put on by the Conservative Christian Democrats.

The march was the cap of a five-day festival that included 80 events throughout the Czech capital. Another march three years ago in Brno, another Czech city, ended in violence.

Returning Gls go to the end of the line

Washington, D.C.-Although the "don't ask, don't tell" law barring openly gay and lesbian service members has been repealed, those who have been discharged will have to wait in line to return to service.

According to the Pentagon, recruitment is through the roof because of the slow economy, so returning personnel will not be given priority in joining the military.

For some, their only recourse might be through the courts, and rulings declaring that the policy and their discharges were unconstitutional. The court can then order the military to reinstate the personnel.

A ruling last year that declared the law unconstitutional is now in the federal appeals court, and if it is upheld, it could open the door to a class-action suit on behalf of any personnel who wished to return to active duty. A trio of discharged service members have already filed a suit seeking reinstatement.

Michael Almy, a former Air Force officer, is one of the three in the suit. He never said he is gay, but was discharged after another person poked through his e-mails in Iraq after his deployment was over. He was recommended for promotion even after his discharge, and was recognized as one of the Air Force's top officers for his unit leadership.
